PhD Position in Organic Boron Chemistry at Kemikum, Stockholm University

Kemikum, with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University.

Research at Kemikum spans all areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, as well as organic chemistry. The research projects range from theory to experiments, from pure basic research to more applied projects often focusing on sustainable chemistry, as well as advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials. Kemikum has a well-developed research infrastructure with a variety of equipment and qualified support from staff researchers.

Kemikum is also responsible for undergraduate education in chemistry and for three master's programs: analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. Doctoral education is conducted in five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry.

PhD Research Topic

Studies in organic boron chemistry.

Organic boron compounds are very important, serving as reagents in organic synthesis, as pharmaceutical substances, and also in materials science. The subject area includes the synthesis and transformation of organic boron compounds. The project focuses on the use of metal and organocatalysis in organic boron chemistry for the synthesis of chiral target molecules.

See the group's website Group's website (https://www.organ.su.se/ks/) for more information about the group, projects, and links to publications.

Eligibility Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the application deadline.

You have basic eligibility if you have obtained a degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or in another way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

For specific eligibility, according to the general study plan for doctoral education in organic chemistry, the applicant must have completed an independent project (thesis) of at least 30 hp at the advanced level in a subject area relevant to the doctoral education subject (organic chemistry) with a passing grade.

Selection

Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include: the applicant's documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area, ability to express oneself orally and in writing in English, ability for analytical thinking, creativity, initiative, independence, and ability to collaborate.

Experience with synthetic boron chemistry is advantageous but not a requirement. The assessment will be based on previous studies and grades, the quality of the independent project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the applicant's written motivation for the application.
